HISTORY OF AGPS RAJOURI
THE NEED FOR QUALITY EDUCATION
Jammu and Kashmir is blessed with natural beauty, rich culture, strong traditions and resilient people. However, difficult terrain, scattered habitations, limited infrastructure and disturbed conditions created many challenges for families living in far-flung and backward areas. Children from such regions often had talent, determination and dreams, but lacked easy access to quality education, modern learning facilities and proper academic guidance.
The need for a strong educational institution was deeply felt in Rajouri, Poonch, Nowshera and adjoining areas. Many children required an environment that could provide not only classroom learning, but also discipline, confidence, values, exposure and opportunities for all-round development. This important need became the foundation for establishing Army Goodwill Public School, Rajouri.
The school was envisioned as a place where children from remote and underprivileged backgrounds could receive meaningful education in a safe, disciplined and supportive environment. It was created to bridge the gap between potential and opportunity, and to help young learners move forward with confidence, dignity and hope.
THE IDEA THAT BECAME A MISSION
In September 2003, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, requested the Army Commander, Northern Command, Lt Gen Hari Prasad, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, to examine the feasibility of establishing quality public schools on the pattern of Army Public School, Beas, in backward and militancy-affected areas of the region.
The proposal was accepted and taken forward under Operation Sadbhavana, with the noble objective of strengthening education, community development and social harmony. What began as a thoughtful initiative soon developed into a purposeful mission to provide children with quality education, discipline, values, confidence and opportunities for a brighter tomorrow.
FOUNDATION OF AGPS RAJOURI
Recognizing the long-standing need for quality educational institutions in the hill districts of Jammu and Kashmir, and with the consent of the Government of J&K, two locations were selected for establishing such schools. In 2004, Lt Gen Hari Prasad, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command, conceived and initiated the establishment of Army Goodwill Public School, Rajouri.
The Government of Jammu and Kashmir extended important support by providing land and facilitating essential infrastructure, including water supply and electricity. Planned as an ₹8.9 crore educational project under Operation Sadbhavana and executed under the aegis of the 25 Infantry Division, the school formally commenced its academic journey on 15 July 2004.
THE JOURNEY TO THE PRESENT CAMPUS
While the permanent campus was being developed at Dhanore Loharan, the school initially functioned from an interim location, presently the site where Valley View Army Public School, Rajouri stands. This ensured that the noble mission of education began without delay and students started receiving the benefit of structured, disciplined and value-based schooling.
A CAMPUS WHERE DREAMS FOUND DIRECTION
Located at Dhanore Loharan, Rajouri, the school grew into a spacious, graceful and well-planned campus surrounded by the natural beauty of the region. The peaceful and disciplined environment of the campus provides students with opportunities in academics, sports, technology, co-curricular activities, leadership, confidence-building and character formation.
Established for Classes VI to XII, the school was envisioned to impart education based on modern and scientific principles while nurturing the ideals of peace, freedom, social justice and national integration. It brings together children from varied backgrounds and helps them grow with confidence, discipline, mutual respect, responsibility and a spirit of service.
Since its inception, the school has not only served students from Rajouri, Poonch, Nowshera and adjoining areas, but has also provided educational opportunities to students from other parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Leh–Ladakh. This has strengthened its role as an institution of goodwill, inclusion, joyful learning and meaningful growth.
